I expected the book to relate how the Fixers fixed scandals, but there were few details about what exactly they did. Instead, the book was largely a collection of unsubstantiated gossip. I found it tedious after awhile that the author thought most everyone in Hollywood was gay or a sex maniac. Even worse, the author could not even get basic facts straight. He said John Ford flew on the Doolittle raid which he did not. He also said Francis X. Bushman's career ended in scandal in 1918 which ignores Bushman costarring in 1925's Ben-Hur. If Fleming could not get provable facts correct, how can he be believed on the bulk of the book which is based on rumors?

In THE FIXERS, E.J. Fleming describes Greta Garbo’s roles in THE TORRENT and THE TEMPRESS as unimportant. Later, he describes SAN FRANCISCO as a film that featured Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. Both of these statements are factually incorrect: Garbo had starring roles in THE TORRENT and THE TEMPTRESS and Nelson Eddy was not featured in SAN FRANCISCO. If I knew this right off the top of my head, why didn’t he?Eddie Mannix (1891-1963) and Howard Strickling (1896-1982) were employed by Metro-Goldwyn Mayer. Both men essentially specialized in stifling scandals that might damage MGM stars and replacing them with positive stories that helped build box office. Everyone knew what they did, but only the two men knew the details of it, and with very few exceptions they took their secrets to their graves. As such, THE FIXERS really has little to say about Mannix and Strickling themselves. It is actually a catalogue of old gossip that may or not be true.Much of it consists of the usual canards. Mama Jean did not precipitate or hasten Jean Harlow’s death via her Christian Scientist beliefs. Thelma Todd's death was mysterious, but she wasn't the victim of a gangland hit. Judy Garland did not have pills forced down her throat by studio executives. Some of it is speculative but possible. Did Lana Turner really have at least three abortions provided by MGM? Did Clark Gable really kill someone in a hit and run? Was Steve Reeves' strange death really murder? The answer: maybe, but third, fourth, fifth hand rumor isn’t proof. Here and there Fleming is sympathetic, as in is portrait of Carole Landis, who he describes as both beautiful and exceptionally talented. (Landis was indeed an attractive woman and she was a good if not spectacular “B” actress, and you need only watch her films to see that.) But most of the time the comments range from catty to nasty. To hear him tell it, every third person mentioned was gay, every fifth person was bisexual, and it didn’t matter any way because everybody was having illicit sex with everybody else. Were there gays and bisexuals in Hollywood? You bet. Was there a lot sleeping around? No doubt. Did Spencer Tracy seduce a teenage and unsophisticated Judy Garland into a nasty affair that left her frail psyche even more warped than it already was? First I’ve ever read of it.On top of all that, THE FIXERS is written in an extremely loose, rather slipshod manner. Sometimes events are presented sequentially, sometimes a story is told in one gulp. It wasn’t unusual for me to stop, back up, and re-read a sentence several times in order to understand what the author means. And yet … prurient gossip of the maybe/maybe not variety has a fascination of its own. THE FIXERS is rubbish, but it’s readable rubbish, and entertaining for what it is—a sort of National Enquirer Bible of Golden Age Hollywood. Read it for that effect, but for that effect alone.GFT, Amazon Reviewer

Too many false statements in this book. John Gilbert DID costar with Greta Garbo in Queen Christina and Lupe Velez died from a suicidal overdose of pills; yes she was pregnant but did NOT break her neck on the toilet. Fleming should had advised this book is mostly fiction.

I have read so many books about Hollywood I feel I'm beginning to become a bit of an expert myself. This book came out in 2004. I don't know how I missed it!Although I knew of many of the stories told here, there is a wealth of new facts in "The Fixers' where the complete story is investigated and, in many cases, finally solved. Although I thought it started out a bit slow as Mr. Fleming laid the foundation of the Fixers, it almost immediately perked up and grabbed my attention once we got into the types of things Mannix and Strickland had to deal with during their long careers at MGM Studios. At this point I couldn't put it down. What has been passed off in other books as mere gossip, in this book they are turned into fully-realized morality tales and a testament to the enormous pressures studios were under to keep their stars' reputation pristine.Mannix was recently immortalized in the film "Hail Caesar," played by Josh Brolin, a humorous attempt to show the things he was called upon to clean up. The characters are all familiar from other books, but not in the way they are written here. You really feel you get the whole story in "The Fixers."Some reviewers have faulted it for what they see as focusing too much on the "closeted" actors, but there were stories from both sides of the fence, one more deliciously tawdry than the next. The story of Nelson Eddie and Jeanette MacDonald was hysterical. I didn't know much about them but the whole thing reads like a Greek Tragedy in Beverly Hills.Great read. Five Stars!

I have always enjoyed reading about the antics of the people who were part of the golden era of motion pictures. You have to take the stories with a grain of salt as few, if any, of the subjects of the book are around to defend themselves. However, I believe the author did an excellent job in his research and that most of these tales are true; show business people are, indeed, different from most of us. I very much enjoyed the first portion of the book as it gave a completely new (to me) perspective on the history of motion pictures. It was insightful, very well written, and made me aware of what a spectacular innovation movies were when the public was first exposed to them.
