So, in a quick mystery, Deaver addresses the slanders easily engendered by social media, society’s reluctance to get involved, institutional cover-up, athletes (celebrities in general?) misbehaving with impunity, and the pressures on law enforcement to solve all these problems tidily while smiling and preserving all of society’s innocence. The focal detective, Jon Avery, is a good man, trying to do what’s right despite his own flaws and the pressures he feels. The victim, Rose Taylor, a college professor, seems resigned to simply persevere through the seemingly insoluble issues caused. And then, in a delicate plot twist, the sort that makes Deaver’s always surprising, the reader finds out that sometimes good can triumph, that corruption should not be assumed, that a person can make the world a little better place.

The short story is a tough genre to master. Too often the reader may be left with the impression of a random section from a greater whole that doesn't actually exist. Not this time. Jeffery Deaver is as at home here as he is leading us through the latest exploits of Lincoln Rhyme. The only issue when you reach the end is that you perversely want more, despite a total absence of loose ends. The best always leave you wanting more.

I read “The Victim’s Club to take the bad taste from the preceding review out of my mouth. And I’m glad I did. Jeffery Deaver’s novella (called ‘Kindle Single’ by Amazon) is just what the doctor ordered.A sleepy county police establishment in a Massachussets college town sees Detective Jon Avery take over a colleague’s case while she’s away on a family emergency. There was nothing sinister or overly dramatic about someone posting on the internet a drugged college professor’s semi-nude photo. Like I said, there was little drama and hysteria to the plot.I could have been “on the rebound” from that last, awful review. But I don’t think so. Plain and simple: Deaver is an excellent writer who hooked me, wowed me and carried me to the plot’s satisfying conclusion in a couple of Sunday afternoon quiet hours.Deaver’s style is superb in an understated, colloquial kind of way; a story a buddy would tell you about the hell of a week he just had. He paints beautiful pictures with his words. The pictures mold to your imagination in a suggestive manner, not forcing you to see the scenes through his eyes, but enhancing the reader’s mental film production. Here’s an example: “The two of them entered the building — gothic and, of course, crowned with fearsome limestone spires — and found the massive food court, filled with hundreds of energetic students. The high ceilings and hard tile floors accentuated the noise. It seemed impossible to have a conversation over the din, but students were certainly trying. The smell of limp burgers and onions warming on the steam table was pervasive.” Wow! That short paragraph is equivalent to a three to four minute pan from a ceiling mounted camera! Better. Here’s another: “The place was decorated in what his wife, Becky, called 1970s Uninspired. The style included brushed aluminum, yellowing acoustic tile and beige walls last painted two budgets ago.” See what he did here? He let the reader experience a physical location first hand, developed a minor character, painted the scene’s mood and foretold the state of mind his protagonist would be walking into as he entered the police station. Finally, the author holds a conversation with the reader: “It really was gorgeous, two stories high and built of intricately carved white stone. And it was crowned, you bet, with spires like those on a Game of Thrones palace.”No doubt about it. This was the best $1.99 I spent today. Moreover, it introduced me to a writer I will be reading more of.A well deserved Five Stars out of Five!

This short story by the prominent American crime writer Jeffery Deaver, the author of the best-selling Lincoln Rhyme book series, consist an excellent choice for the reader who desires to delve into a short, but well crafted and narrated, crime story and indulge in the universally acknowledged Deaver's thrilling, full of amazing plot twists, writing style. This is a simple story and for once it doesn't involve a murder but a case of public humiliation of a Preston University professor, Rosie Taylor, who after being drugged with Rohypnol pills in a university party wakes up with her clothes half-torn and unable to recollect what happened the crucial time period. The next day she finds nude pictures of her in vulgar poses from the previous night. At first, detective Jon Avery, regards the incident as a typical ''revenge porn'' case but he soon realizes that the truth is a bit more complicated. ''The Victim's Club'' is a very short book, which you will finish reading it in one sitting but nevertheless, it is highly enjoyable and it is certainly worth the low Amazon price. Recommended!

This is one of those "can't-put-it-down-til-you're-finished" books that has everything you need in a good mystery! Although the book is basically a short story, I thoroughly enjoyed every morsel of it! The plot was excellent, the characters interesting, and the surprise ending was over-the-top sublime! The book is also very well-written and glides smoothly across the pages. The story is about a detective who investigates an assault against a college professor at a prestigious college. All I can say after reading this enjoyable book is "Well done Jeffery Deaver!"

This is a short story by famous author Jeffery Deaver. Senior detective Jon Avery takes on a troubling case. At an off-campus party, university professor Rose Taylor is drugged, undressed, and photographed. These photos swamp the internet. Why was she targeted? He is facing a wall of silence at the Preston College, and he may have consequences as the local sheriff does not want him to pursue this case. Great story, intriguing and a good plot and interesting twists.

Good but slow read. I figured short crime fiction would have been snappier. The private-eye monologue would have gone over better in first pov, though, imo. That could have helped pick up the pace, too. I found myself skimming some bits. Other than tmi, I enjoyed the story. I'm a sucker forSPOILER ALERTVigilante justice.

Pretty lame. We certainly Know halfway through the story that the detective knows nothing about math. This was like reading a story written by an eighth grader. Don’t waste your money.
