She has been happily married to her husband, Jim, for almost twenty- five years. Together, they have raised two wonderful children, a daughter, Mariah, and a transgender son named Jordan. Cheryl is a transgender advocate and believes strongly in protecting the human rights of transgender persons and helping to educating others. Evans received a bronze medal in 2017 for her first book, I Promised Not to Tell, which became the seed for this new Christian book on gender and sexuality.

i think we need more books like this one - where real people share their real stories and how they see the world, as a parent, ally and advocate for the LGBTQ+ communities. in the last month, i've read about 8 or 9 other books on LGBTQ+ Christianity, and it was a refreshing perspective for me to see this perspective.i would recommend this book for any parent, ally or advocate of transgender or genderqueer people, coming from a conservative christian background and wondering how they can support transgender / genderqueer individuals... with a few important notesfor all of the good that i think this book does, there are some things that i have a hard time reading. specifically, the continue advocacy for a patriarchal Godhead with masculine pronouns, the referring to Jesus "abolishing" the old testament laws (instead of fulfilling), and a few other minor points that could easily turn a member of the LGBTQ+ community away.but it's important to remember: this book is not written by a member of the LGBTQ+ community, for the LGBTQ+ community. the author is a parent to a trans child, and this book is written for other parents of LGBTQ+ people.i would also say that the introduction to the book set up the discussion throughout as a little more two-sided than the writing ended up being. i appreciate the author's attempt at bringing open, honest and respectful discussion to the conversation. the introduction sets up the book as a two-sided discussion, which would present for example the "nature vs nurture" argument. i was honestly fearful of this, as i started reading the book... worried that there would be too much of an invitation for members of the LGBTQ+ community (myself included) to be "polite" and "respectful" toward the power dynamics that oppress us. what i found, thankfully, was a well articulated discussion of the nature side of the conversation with a sprinkling of "but other people believe in nurture" throughout.in spite of the flaws that i see - which, again, are my own theology, political and sociological perspectives - i think this book is a must read for parents, allies and advocates of trans/queer people. you will be well rewarded for your time, in reading this book.

Let me start by saying Ms. Evans took me on another journey with her. She made me stop and think, “What if, Why, How,” and she was having the same questions. What did she do, she started researching until she found the answer. She is exploring a fairly new subject, wants to know the answers and is sharing the information with us. It is a subject all of us need to know more about and understand. Some are totally disowned by parents, ignored by the general public, are bullied until they finally commit suicide. And I ask myself “is that right,”? The answer I reached was, NO!They are conceived and born just like you and I, so why cannot they be given a chance like you and I? Eunuchs have always been a question in my mind as did Ms. Evans.Where did she go to answer her question, the Bible. She had a question, she researched it until she found the answer. Regardless of whether this has happened in your family, a friend’s family, this book and her other book, “I Promised Not To Tell,” are very Educational, well written, and informative. I was in Education and wished I’d had it to read years ago. Some of the kids would confide in me, I listened as they were tormented within their own bodies, but knew not how to advise other than prayer. Ms. Evans, you are great, keep up the good work. My child came out a year ago. He never hid his identity. I always hoped it would change. I am now embracing my true son and hope this world will see him for the awesome compassionate human being he is. My biggest fear is not my son being who he is. My biggest fear are the haters who hide behind religion. They use their religion as a platform to abuse all that they are ignorant of. I read this book to be able to communicate effectively with anyone about this issue. Having raised this child, there is no doubt in my mind that you are born exactly as you are to be.

Loved this book! Everyone should read this book, even if you’re not religious, to better understand transgender people. The mom who wrote this did a lot of research and offers us some solid arguments for being positive and affirming to trans people. As a parent of a trans male myself and a Christian, i love the scripture references the author included and have highlighted them for return reading. This book was well written and very enjoyable. You will be blessed by reading it!

I am a transgender woman and therefore appreciate the effort here to try and enlighten interested individuals on the subject. I am a elderly trans woman who worries deeply about those young individuals and especially those who have been rejected by their own families. I have lost many people who were close to me in the past, as stated hear no one would choose this life not because who we are but how society treats us. Don't be so fearful of what you do not understand.

This book perfectly sums up the seemingly inconsistent struggle between transgender people, the Christian Church, and God. Conflicting views abound and its easy to get confused especially when raising a transgender child yourself, having praised and loved God your whole life, only to be told by some that your child simply isn’t good enough or is actually possessed by demons. This book will dispel fears and gives a good wholesome perspective on the situation. Just breath, continue to love God, continue to love your child, and don’t let ‘other people’s opinions’ confuse you. Highly recommended. CAB

I thought I was going to have to walk away from Christianity when my son came out as trans. There is hope that some people are open minded in the church.

I would definitely recommend this book! Being a Trans Christian myself this book helped me to better explain my faith to others and why it's ok to be Trans and Christian.
