One tiny useless 5" x7" pencil sketch schematic map of the TGV train. The description of "helpful maps" is referring to maps of the tourist destinations but not road maps, train or bus maps, or maps of hub cities/towns. Contains chapter excerpts from the France book about Rouen, Honfleur, D-Day Beaches, Caen, and Mont St.-Michel. So if you are only going to those Tourist Destinations and don't want to bring the Rick Steves France book it might be useful. I was hoping to find travel guidance unique to Normandy. Best ways to get around. Info about travel around the Pays d'Auge and other small towns. Driving routes in Normandy. Nothing about any of that. And the Practicalities section is just an excerpt from the France book- nothing specific to Normandy.
I am planning a week in Normandy and thought this book would be useful. Nearly half is dedicated to D-Day sights. Beyond that, only a few cities are mentioned with scant information. Caen has no information on the various abbeys and the cathedral. There's more info available on the entire province in my Eyewitness France guide in the few pages they devote to Normandy.
Covers all of the essentials from the key towns to the D-Day sites. Good transportation info and many sleeping and eating recommendations. Maps o.k. but not great. Only bit of information missing was the hours of the shuttle busses from the parking to Mont St Michel but I am sure I can find that online.
Hits the high points of mainly the WWII Operation Overlord landings and monuments. Much less coverage of present day Normandy. Beyond WWII history, nothing about the capital, Caen, and zero about the lovely city of Deauville. Good book, but should be entitled "Normandy WWII History and Monuments".
Came in very handy on a recent trip to Normandy and the landing beaches. This is an excellent travel guide series that not only tells you what you're going to see but historical background and Rick Steves invaluable travel tips.
Book arrived on time and in perfect new condition. I find the Rick Steves books to be reliable and enjoy the information that is provided. This book is small and will be great for travel. It covers places to stay and eat as well as attractions with a bit of background on history and local area.
we just got back from Normandy and Rick Steves book was invaluable and made for a very moving experience.
This book was great for planning a trip to Normandy. The size is small enough to pack in a suitcase or day-bag. Rick lays out the various sights to see and offers suggestions for itineraries, eating, and sleeping. Very pleased with this purchase, especially since it was my first Rick Steves book.
