When you're selling a book titled "Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet" a buyer would reasonably assume that these recipes use only ingredients allowed on the SCD. Feeling in the mood for trying a new type of bread/cracker recipe (of which I have many great ones), I flipped to the section titled "Savory Goods" first. There are 7 recipes there and 2 of them contain baking powder, an illegal ingredient on the SCD diet. This is being marketed to people who are on the SCD because they are sick. And the SCD diet is incredibly strict and requires total compliance. In my mind, that makes it unconscionable to include ingredients that shouldn't be there. Even if every single other recipe in the book meets SCD requirements, having 2 our of 7 savory goods recipes makes this cookbook a fail.
Two years ago I was diagnosed with moderate Cohn's disease. Wont go into details, if you have it you know. My doctor prescribed me a regimen of Lialda and anti reflux meds. Popping six pills a day helped relieve some of the symptoms but I always worried about toilet access when traveling.I decided I did not want to pop pills the rest of my life just to get my symptoms from moderate to mild. Searched internet and found info on the SCD diet. I have been on this for a little over a month and for me, the results are amazing! After the first 2 weeks I no longer had diarrhea. My acid reflux improved and I have started weaning myself off the meds. Down to 4 pills a day and feeling good.I love the yogurt and food. Had to buy two yogurt makers to reduce prep time. I wish I had a private chef to help with cooking but like they say; better to spend more time in kitchen than the bathroom. Highly recommend to anyone with IBD. Also, unintended consequence of SCD, I have lost 15 lbs. Good Luck!
I just tried my first EASY recipe from this book, lemon cookies, and they are delicious. If you are following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and are feeling deprived of sweets, I guarantee you these cookies will satisfy you. You can even eat the batter, which is so yummy your cookies may never make it to the oven. In my opinion, this one recipe is worth the cost of the book. Note: Some reviewers mention that some of the recipes in this book call for baking powder, which is illegal on the SCD; but I think they may be confusing baking powder and baking soda. The lemon cookie recipe calls for baking soda, which is legal. :)
I'm in a Specific Carbohydrate Diet social media group that recommended this book. The author is actually one of the members of the group so it's great to support his work. I was impressed by the variety of dishes from a multi-ethnic background. Being of Italian descent, I appreciated the European dishes, but I also liked the mix of Indian cuisine as well. Having variety really helps when you're trying to stick to a very rigid eating plan.
I didn't give this a five because I'm not sure how suitable it is for something with special dietary needs. I bought it to get ideas of how I might cook for my in-laws who have such needs. Unfortunately, the recipes are too outside the box for them. That said, I loved many of the recipes! The avocado soup is yummy and the Mumbai Street Snack is always a hit. There are many other good recipes in here so I will be keeping the book. The recipes are generally simple and easy to prepare so if you are willing to be more adventurous but just don't have a lot of time, consider giving this a try.
To start, let me say I am the partner of someone on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (for Crohn's Disease) but all my dinners are SCD-friendly. I can eat non-SCD foods but, since I started using the recipes from this book, I don't miss them terribly much. The dishes are really, really tasty!Considering I've made twelve recipes so far (see the following list), I think I've reached a point where I can judge this book: Kung Pao Chicken, Mom's Stuffed Chicken, Beef and Broccoli Chinese-Style, Bulgogi Wraps, Vietnamese Pork with Shiitake, Mock Fish Sauce, SCD Asian/Soy Sauce, Mom's Tomato Sauce, Eggplant Parmesan Bake, "Pasta-less" Lasagna, Angie's Vinaigrette and Parmesan and Walnut Crusted Chicken. The quality of the recipes is fairly consistent: of the above 12 recipes, I'd say two were just *meh* (Kung Pao Chicken and Beef and Broccoli), two were fantastic (Bulgogi Wraps and "Pasta-less" Lasagna) and the other eight were good. I'm docking half a star due to the *meh* recipes.Insofar as difficulty, some recipes require finessing--for example, when I put the beef for the Bulgogi Wraps into the skillet after marinating, there was too much liquid, so I removed the beef, reduced the liquid to a thicker consistency, then added the beef back in. Generally things don't get TOO challenging, though. I'm docking another half star due to the finessing requisite. The book has a lovely introductory part/overview of the diet which helped me feel like the author is knowledgeable and on my side, so to speak. The author also goes out of his way to make sure your health is kept intact; for example, there are footnotes on certain recipes stating to wait a certain period of time until symptoms have stopped before trying them.To the reviewer who said you need special ingredients like SCD Yogurt, etc. to make most of the recipes, that is demonstrably false. It is necessary for SOME recipes, but certainly not for the majority. All in all, I absolutely recommend this cookbook. You will not regret purchasing it.
