Review
Disco: An Encyclopedic Guide To The Cover Art Of Disco approaches the disco aesthetic through the record sleeves of the time, which offer a perfect distillation of what the scene was all about – particularly the funk-infused electro-heavy brand that carried into the 1980s – think beautiful people, inventive graphic design and loveable forays into futurism. Presented by Disco Patrick (honestly) and Patrick Vogt, it’s a large-format book containing over 2,000 album cover designs – hundreds at full size – representing a comprehensive visual history of disco culture. There are also interviews, conducted by Claes “Discoguy†Widlund, with important disco personalities and record label figures, as well as histories, biographies and discographies. And that’s not all – the first 200 orders come with free world exclusive 12? disco single of Sexy Lady by Something Extra (Canada, 1980). (The Editors we-heart.com)What’s that, you say? You haven’t seen that many disco LP covers? Well, never fear --“Disco: An Encyclopedic Guide to the Cover Art of Disco Records†(Soul Jazz Books) is here. Slated for release on November 30, this large-format book presents full-size reproductions of cover art from the likes of Gloria Gaynor, James Brown, Donna Summer, Grace Jones, Isaac Hayes, Kool and the Gang, and dozens more -- over 2,000 designs in total, plus more than 700 12-inch sleeves. (Anneliese Cooper Artinfo)You certainly can judge a book by its cover. In this case, Disco: An Encyclopedic Guide to the Cover Art of Disco shows just that. There are covers of records by artists such as Donna Summer, Village People, Teddy Pendergrass and O'Jays as well as lesser-known musicians. Be warned, though: The fashions of that time are on full display, too. (Andrews Davis Windy City Times)The new book Disco: An Encyclopedic Guide to the Cover Art of Disco Records includes over 2000 (!) album covers from the 70s and 80s, with at least 95 percent of them featuring scantily-clad and/or greased-up female body parts. There are interviews with musicians, designers and producers from the era, and the covers themselves include so many oh-so familiar names like Donna Summer, Chic, Gloria Gaynor, Grace Jones, Isaac Hayes, and Kool and the Gang, as well as hundreds of more obscure acts. (Alissa Walker gizmodo.com)This is an exquisitely wrapped 360-page piece of eye candy, thanks to Patrick Vogt's fittingly excessive design. (Jake Malooley chicagoreader.com)Disco: An Encyclopaedic Guide To The Cover Art Of Disco Records is a 360-page hardcover book showcasing more than 2000 album covers and 700 12-inch sleeves from the 1970s through to the mid-'80s―and, with the book measuring 12-inches by 12-inches, some are presented in full size. I have mixed emotions about the book which I did find to be quite comprehensive. The book is nicely divided by the major record labels of the era and then divided by sub-labels when needed. Each section includes a list of the albums in the order of their "matrix" (catalog) numbers, which is really nice. The bulk of the pages have 16 covers per page. For most of the albums, only the front covers are included. The book does have some pages with the front cover of a single album. I appreciated the task the authors undertook to obtain images of over 2,000 albums. However, I have to mention that the quality of the images of the covers are not consistent. Many of the album covers photographed were visably worn. There didn't seem to be any attempt to reasonably restore the images for the book, probably due to the quantity. Some photographs are also of covers with cut corners (promotional copies). Once again, those images didn't bother me too much due to the quantity of covers in the book. However, there are many photographs of covers taken with the shrink wrap still on the albums. Wouldn't be a problem except those cover images have streak marks from the reflection of the flash! Why didn't they remove the shrink wrap before photographing? Plus, the rule of the day was to remove the shrink wrap from vinyl records to prevent warpage. On the plus side, the book does include a fun collection of advertisement for the albums. The images of the advertisements are of a better quality than some of the images of the covers, though.Maybe my expectations are a little unrealistic since I still have many of the albums in the book with covers in relatively good shape. Just seems with the technology available, the images could have been better. Fortunately, the hardcover book is reasonably priced.
Absolutely love this book.I am a huge Disco fan, born in the time to be an older Teen when Disco really hit (circa 1975 thru 1982). I dabbled in DJ work and was a collector of 12 Inch Records. One of the great things about Disco was the covers of Albums and certain 12 Inch Singles. This is an A to Z of those covers and is presented in a simple but appealing way.I will treasure this book for the rest of my life.If you love Disco nostalgia, you do not want to miss out on this beautiful book.
HUGE book. Perfect for coffee table....except - the scans. The scans are done so unprofessionally that many are blurry, and the paper seems cheap. The layout of the book is confusing, too; it's all done by record labels. Themes would have been better. Also, a best-selling, genre-defining album could be stuck in the middle of a page somewhere, surrounded by 8 other pics, while some LP no one has heard of has a full scan on the opposite page. Returned it.
When they say you're getting an encyclopedia, they're exactly right. The covers are grouped by label and then by catalog number within each label. The book could have benefited from better organization, perhaps around themes: sex, abstract "art," popstars going disco, gay/homoerotic, dancefloor scenes, etc. As it is, this is essentially a (very nice) printout of Discogs pages. It's not really a book you could flip through and enjoy more than once or twice. On the plus side, there are some interesting interviews from major players in the disco industry, and some great ads and other miscellany too. The book is beautifully designed and constructed. Still, for the price, and for the editors' taking a subject that could have had a lot of sizzle and making it dry instead, I'm feeling buyer's remorse about this purchase.
great photos.
This is a fantastic collection of disco history! There is also a seperate vinyl set to accompany this book. Enjoy!
Great. Surpassed expectations. Was a great gift.
Good collection of the history of disco. Would have been better with chart stats and more interviews. Overall a nice slice of musical history.
