Enjoyed the book. Disappointed by the step back concerning money and the lack of contingency preparation. Seems out of character for someone raised poor in a harsh economic environment and taught to be responsible for one's own actions. Memories of a relative who lived through the Depression not wasting _anything_ from table scraps that got buried in the garden to fertilize the soil to pocket change being saved in jars to canning one's own food to general thriftiness in not spending money on alcohol or cigarettes... don't seem to translate well to this world.Where did the brass knuckles go? No knife? Cub scouts knew to carry a knife. No defenses for the secretary? It's not like he's never met unscrupulous people and he's in a _city_, even grandparents know a city isn't as safe as the country - by way of simple probability and proximity if nothing else. And after meeting some interesting characters no ideas about taser-type weapons or defenses against cold, immobility etc.? No Runed hat to protect one's head from bullets and stay on during a fight? No Runes to research for strength, eyesight, speed or enchanting processes for putting runes on a belt to be used at need? What is his teacher waiting for? The MC has already proved he's a worthy person. And the failure to take care of the MC's employee is embarrassing. Failure to make payroll in six months after being given what amounts to a year of pay for two people doesn't seem reasonable and is a bit disheartening concerning the MC's character. A second or third job would seem to be a viable option. Paying the employee in advance would be preferred. Products such as security barriers, personal shields, alarms, anti-corrosion for vehicles, cleaning services after crimes (cleaning the blood off the floor or carpet), etc. Using the secretary as a walking advertisement for special runes for hair, makeup, defenses. Runed toys that put themselves away, Runed devices to find a child or pet, Runed devices to clean water, Non-lethal Runed bullets, a secure container for the secretary to store general runes for sale, a runed safe, runes for glasses to see in the dark... missed opportunities were abundant. And don't get me wrong, it's clear this stuff takes time to develop but people do actually think in the shower or while walking or waiting for a ride, etc. Sometimes they think of things they would like to have but don't know how to create and then when a certain book comes along... solutions appear. Reading about someone's inability to think, take action or someone's excuse for not taking action is not actually entertaining, it's tedious. The incessant, "I'm about to do something but I have to do it later", is also tedious. In any case, while I had to put the book down to bleed off frustration and then pick it up later to finish it, the book was generally well-written, entertaining and clever. I will read more when they come out.
This is a terrific second volume in the Arcane Casebook series. Cool magic, great characters, and three intriguing mysteries -- which (mild spoiler) dovetail together by the end of the book. My only complaint regards the number of typographical and grammatical errors. Lots and lots of missing words, misspelled words, and missing punctuation. At one point, the names of two different characters are switched (Anne and Hannah). It feels like the book was rushed into production before a final edit. Nonetheless, "Ghost of a Chance" is a heck of a lot of fun. I highly recommend the series to any fan of occult detectives or fantasy noir. -- lyradora
I won’t go into much detail because if you are here you’ve probably already read his first book in the series “In Plain Sightâ€. If you haven’t read that yet, go read that first, its currently $0.99 for the ebook and well worth it.Now that you’ve read the first book, know that the sequel in the series lives up to expectations and is well worth the money/time to readIf you are a fan of gumshoe detective stories you will like this book (especially if you like the 1930’s setting). Even more so if you like a little magic mixed in.Any fan of Jim Butcher’s Dresden series or Larry Corriea’s Grimnoir series will enjoy this book.
Really good story. Private detective/ magician Alex in an alternative 1930s NYC takes any case that comes in the door, from tailing cheating spouses to using his magical skills to find missing dogs. His latest case, looking for a missing husband, seems routine, until it draws him into a mystery involving a rash of mysterious thefts across the city. If that wasn't enough, a killer ghost stalks the city as well, and soon his magical talents are strained to stop the killer ghost before it strikes again. Highly recommended.
I finished the latest book in the series, and found it to be very enjoyable. It's a hard boiled detective novel set in a world of magic. Being familiar with the works of Dashiell Hammett and Mickey Spillane, I can definitely get a sense of how the author is channeling the classing noir PIs. However he does it in a well constructed world where magic has diverged this from ours, where the rules are internally consistent. In this book the protagonist starts behind the eight ball, and has to get things back to a decent place to be. That's a fairly common trope from the noir PI genre, and works well.I eagerly anticipate further books in the series.
Very absorbing mystery! I couldn’t put it down. It had a great plot and vintage feel. Really caught the favor of the Thirties with a paranormal twist.
I like this series. The hero is a just a trope of all 1930s fictional detectives. But this is turning into a nice popcorn series.
These are fun books. I’ll keep buying them as they come out!
