Review
“A capacious and ambitious collection . . . Salter’s formal prowess is on display, as is her rueful wisdom, her vivid eye and memory for detail, and her ability to collapse time.” —Rachel Hadas, Los Angeles Review of Books“Unforgettable . . . These are poems of a woman passionately living her life . . . At once erudite and spontaneous, serious and lighthearted.” —Laverne Firth, New York Journal of Books“Smart, quirky, and offbeat . . . A lively mix of wit and imagination . . . In The Surveyors, [Salter] showcases her impeccable form, her lines as tight and sharp as rapiers . . . A poetry collection to cherish.” —Scott Neuffer, Shelf Awareness“Essential not only for Salter’s fans but for readers of poetry in general . . . Salter has been working with quiet excellence as a poet since the publication of her first collection in 1985. For all that, she wears her knowledge lightly . . . She is superbly skilled in the old appurtenances of meter and rhyme, deploying coincidences of rhythm and sound that only rereading discloses—but her ease extends to her freer lyric style as well . . . Salter provides sane and long-lasting rewards. —Library Journal (starred review)

With every book of her long career, Mary Jo Salter ups the ante. Her new book has stunning poems that include the virtuosic crown of sonnets, The Surveyors, to Old Saw, a humorous poem about the gap between baby boomers and younger generations. The poems have humor, yes, but underneath the humor is the seriousness of growing older and moving on from a failed marriage into a new relationship. With the skill of a musician like Renee Fleming or Yo-Yo Ma, Salter unfolds her narratives, and the labor that went into crafting the final product disappears into phrase after phrase of melodious song.
At times, as I read the poems in The Surveyors, I worried whether a poem should click shut or, if it does, how that click should resonate. Perhaps this is just a worry that comes with reading a collection of well-made poems. And these are well-made poems, Salter showing skill with playful rhymes--Bruges/huge, Prada/nada--and with the sustained structure of a crown of sonnets (with a sixteen-line sonnet slipped in). A few of the poems feel slight, a few seem too autobiographical, but even those poems are engaging . And there are poems—particularly the meditations that focus on the disquiet of living cultured, comfortable (if not invariably happy) lives in a world of ongoing turmoil, poems like “The Surveyors†(the crown of sonnets) and “An Afghan Carpetâ€â€”that help give this book a satisfying and memorable weight.
This is a witty, poignant, humorous and extremely well-crafted collection of poems to read and read again.
Bored me to death......I'm so disappointed.
