First of all the background color of the map makes it difficult to read in especially in low light. Some of the graphics were also difficult due to color choices. As a topographic map this falls way short. But aside from that I liked the map. The format is fine you just have to realize that number for the bordering maps is printed at the edge of where the next map will pick up. The one thing that could have been better would be insets of the larger cities and towns.
First, I’m spoiled and admit it. I live in Maine, home of DeLorme (now a subsidy of Garmin), makers of the GOLD STANDARD of atlases and gazetteers for US States. If DeLorme were to tackle the Canadian Provinces, I’d purchase the ones I need from them with no hesitation. Alas, they haven’t yet.This is where the Back Road Mapbooks come in. I give them “Silverâ€. I purchased both the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Guides. A note to others, both guides also provide maps for Prince Edward Island. For others considering these, they are descent maps, as long as you don’t need city street maps, which these lack. It’s a good thing most major towns/cities in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have a tourist info center where you can pick-up a local map (at least at those I stopped at), otherwise, I’d be lost if I needed to get around a town with this atlas.Whoever packed my order at Amazon accidentally folded the cover on the NS guide. I ordered "paper bound" and got spiral bound. I'm going to guess these are one and the same, despite the price difference listed on the website.As I said at the start, I’m spoiled. Back Roads, if you’re reading this, here are some tips to be as good as DeLorme and survive should they take on creating Canadian Province gazetteers:1. Move your map key/legend to the inside front cover. It’s a pain thumping through several pages looking for the key/legend.2. Loose the spiral bind and staple the pages together. “Tear resistant†isn’t enough in this case. I’ve forced myself to be extra careful, fearful I’m going to tear out a page.3. Loose most of your tourist guide info. I bought your product for the maps. If I wanted a tourist guide, there are plenty of those to choose from.4. It’s great you’ve covered all the backroads, but once in a while, I need to come back to civilization. Include in-town maps in your atlas (which DeLorme does).
This map book is necessary as rain gear! A great way to explore and adore. Good campground advice. Nova Scotia is terrific.
