Whether or not one can accept that HH The Dali Lama is a god-king or reincarnation of an enlightened being, one must admit that his writings always seek to explore and encourage the very highest elements of the human spirit.This book is not a diatribe against China, though it does make a good case against China's actions in Tibet based upon international norms, but a very sad depiction of how very cruel people can be toward each other. Fortunately, fifty years after its writing, with no resolution in sight and atrocities still being committed in Tibet, one cannot help but be moved by the continued passionate engagement of this "simple Buddhist monk" ( his own self description ).
I was looking for more spiritually in this book...but the history lesson has been invaluable in my further understanding of Tibet's struggle against the Communist Chinese regime and the subtle oppressive negotiating techniques they employed.
Sometimes it's easy to see buddhism as a practice for demi gods. And I still feel that, but this book really grounded my ideas about Tibet, the Dalai Lama and the people of that land. By the end I saw The Dalai Lama as human, An extraordinary human, but human nonetheless.
A great eye-opener for someone completely unfamiliar with the history of Tibet. This book is as much a history lesson as it is an auto-biography, which I always enjoy experiencing. The Dalai Lama remains amazingly objective in his account, considering what he & his people underwent. I also appreciate the thoughtfulness with which the was written in regards to the average Western reader...the complex and foreign names are always accompanied by a simple English reminder of what/whom they refer to. Great read!
Highly recommended book for those interested in the long and troubled history of Tibet, written with humor and profound love by the one who knows it best - the Dalai Lama. Fascinating history with a sad present and a future still to be resolved. Seller did a wonderful job in delivering a book in excellent condition. Highly recommend both seller and book.
Great book. A lot of powerful history.
The book is based on the life of the 14th Dalai Lama. How he had to face the attack of the communist China in the name of liberating Tibet at an age of just 16 and the repercussions faced by its people thereby.Many historical doubts are also cleared and it brings forth the double faced Chinese behind the veil of communism for world domination in the name of fight against imperialism. A must read book for everyone.........!!!!
